Such a statement from Minister Darmanin comes following the arrest of an Algerian influencer who posted a video on Tiktok inciting violence. The influencer was put on a plane to Algeria on January 9, but he was sent back to France by the Algerian authorities on the same day, Le Figaro explains.
This further worsened the relationship between the two countries, with Minister Darmanin now requesting for the 2013 agreement.
Under the 2013 French-Algerian intergovernmental agreement, Algerian diplomatic passport holders are eligible to enter the territory of France without the need to apply for a visa and move around the country freely.
However, since the Algerian authorities are not cooperating, Minister Darmanin stressed that touching the leaders with the suspension of this entry facilitation would be more intelligent and effective.
Relationship Between France & Algeria Needs Mutual Respect
In addition to the above-mentioned, Minister Darmanin said that the two countries should respect one another.
Minister Darmanin stressed that Algeria is a sovereign country and that France respects it, but their response to the last situation has been humiliating for France.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria rejected the accusations of the French authorities that the country was trying to humiliate France and further escalate the situation.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the expulsion of the influencer from France was arbitrary and abusive, suggesting that they did the right thing by returning him back to France.
