In a landmark decision, European authorities have committed up to €370 million ($400 million) to support the establishment of a 'Green Hydrogen Valley' in Italy's southern region of Puglia. Spearheaded by Italian energy giant Edison, energy contractor Saipem, and Sosteneo SGR, this ambitious initiative aims to revolutionize Italy's steel industry and pave the way for sustainable industrial practices.
The plan entails the deployment of 260 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 160 MW of electrolysis capacity around the cities of Brindisi and Taranto. This infrastructure will enable the production of green hydrogen, which will be used to decarbonize the manufacturing of direct reduced iron at Italy's largest steel plant in Taranto, as well as other steel mills across the country.
Crucially, the European Commission has recognized the significance of this initiative by including it in its Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) category. This designation unlocks substantial funding from the European Union, facilitating the development of the project and accelerating progress towards a greener future.
Italy's grid operator Snam is also making strides in the hydrogen sector, with authorities endorsing its €100 million plan to renovate existing pipelines and install new ones for hydrogen transportation. This complementary effort is expected to be completed by 2028, further bolstering Italy's hydrogen infrastructure.
The Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project will be executed through a special purpose vehicle, with Edison, Saipem, and Sosteneo holding significant stakes. Umberto Tamburrino, Managing Partner at Sosteneo, expressed pride in contributing to the decarbonization of Italy's industrial steel hubs, emphasizing the project's potential to drive economic growth at both local and national levels. He underscored the importance of investing in the energy transition to achieve long-term returns for investors while facilitating the transformation of the global energy system.
Italy's Puglia region is poised to emerge as a trailblazer in the green hydrogen revolution, thanks to strategic partnerships, significant investments, and unwavering commitment to sustainability. With the support of European authorities and industry leaders, the Green Hydrogen Valley initiative is set to propel Italy towards a cleaner, greener future while driving innovation and economic growth.
