The decision was announced by Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares during the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Congress of Deputies, EU Helpers reports.
222 Acquired Spanish Citizenship in 2023
The Minister recalled that a similar decision was made at the beginning of 2023 when the country’s government decided to grant citizenship to a total of 222 Nicaraguan political prisoners for the same reasons.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, José Manuel Albares, said that the situation will now also extend to the first-degree relatives in a precarious situation of these over two hundred people who have already been naturalised.
Since July 2018, over 25,000 Nicaraguans have entered Spain. About 6,000 of them requested asylum, making Nicaragua the fourth country with the highest number of asylum requests.
68 Nicaraguans Entered Spain on December 12 Under Framework of Labour Migration Pilot Project
On December 12, 2023, 68 Nicaraguans, organised into a total of 23 family units with international protection requirements in Costa Rica, reached Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport.
These Nicaraguans reached Spain, as part of the framework of the labour migration pilot project introduced by the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion Social Security and Migration, together with the Provincial Council of Valladolid and Accem, which helps regular and safe migration.
Besides, through a statement, the Ministry stressed that a two-member family also arrived and will be integrated into the foster care system as part of the National Resettlement Program.
The Minister also emphasised the support of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Acem for the launching of this project.
Spanish authorities have permitted the entry of a large number of migrants reaching Spain for better life and work opportunities in recent years.
