Based on the figures from Publico Brazil, the number of visa applications from Brazilians to study in Portugal marked a notable decrease year by year.
The same source reveals that the decline is also noted in applications for temporary study visas for about six months with international scholarships.
While in 2022, the figures accounted for 14.34 per cent of the total documents issued by the consulates, now they account for only 6.80 per cent of the overall share.
The Vice-Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, João Amaro de Matos, and CEO of Grupo Lusófona in Brazil, António Fiúza, said that the decline in visa applications is in contrast with the total number of Brazilian enrollments, which consider to remain steady and growing.
Several Factors Leading To Decline in Number of Visas for Study Purposes
Experts dealing with visas for Brazilian nationals told Publico that there are several factors that lead to the decline in the number of visas for study purposes, while the number of enrollments continues to remain stable.
CEO of the consultancy Aliança Portuguesa, Fábio Knauer, said that the main reason is that in the recent past, a large number of people opted for student visas to work in Portugal, with some even not participating in the courses for which they were enrolled.
Increase in Number of Job-Seeking Visas
In contrast to the number of visas issued for work purposes, this year, a sharp increase was noted in job-seeking visas by Brazilians.
In 2024, job-seeking visas account for 54.17 per cent of all visas granted by Portuguese consulates located in Brazil, a significant increase compared to 31.86 per cent of the total registered in 2023.
