In order to be eligible to apply for Norwegian citizenship, foreign nationals must pass the citizenship test or the social studies test in the Norwegian language.
The high success rate recorded last year suggests that those residing in Norway who want to obtain the country’s passport are taking the requirements seriously and have learned the importance of participating in society.
Expressing gratitude for the results, Norway’s Minister of Employment and Inclusion, Tonje Brenna, said that in order to be able to succeed in Norway, it is essential that foreign nationals have a good knowledge of Norwegian society.
The same stressed that it is important for everyone to participate in society equally as everyone else.
Number of Participants Passing Norwegian Citizenship Test Is Consistently High
The number of participants passing the Norwegian citizenship remains consistently high.
This, according to the Directorate for Higher Education and Competence, Sveinung Skule, is a positive trend, which shows that the majority of those taking the test have knowledge of Norwegian society.
Data show that the regions of Akershus, Møre og Romsdal and Vestland consistently have the highest proportion of people who pass the citizenship test.
Norway’s citizenship test consists of 32 questions. To pass the test, participants must answer at least 24 questions correctly. The Norwegian citizenship test must be taken in the Norwegian language.
In 2024, a total of 27,276 foreign nationals obtained Norwegian citizenship. Syrians were the main beneficiaries. Data from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration show that 3,746 Syrian nationals obtained citizenship last year, with this nationality having among the highest approval rates, which stood at 97 per cent.
