The country will replace the present ID card version with a new, upgraded one that completely complies with EU regulations, according to a statement made by Mircea Eşanu, director of ASP, EU Helpers.
By March 2025 at the latest, the new ID card should be available. Once all citizens of Moldova have the new card, the government hopes that these documents will allow citizens of the country to travel within EU borders.
According to Moldova 1, Eşanu mentioned that the new ID card would feature "an information carrier" in addition to complying with EU regulations.
Since 2015, Moldova has not updated its identity cards. Some people who recently received the document, nevertheless, already have the revised version.
For Moldovans to be allowed to join the EU based only on this document, an agreement with the EU must still be reached, even with the previously stated updates to all the other older documents.
The issuance of updated ID cards is anticipated to proceed without any problems, as Moldova now provides applicants with documentation that is sent straight to their residences. Additionally, documents are supplied outside of the nation.
In an effort to make traveling to the EU as straightforward as possible for its inhabitants, Moldova plans to update the IDs.
Currently, in order to enter the EU, Moldovans must present their biometric passport.
Since April 2014, inhabitants of Moldova have been able to enter the EU and other Schengen countries—aside from Ireland—without a visa.
At the moment, Moldovans intending to join the EU must have a biometric passport that will still be valid three months after the planned return.
In addition, they must provide evidence of their intended use of the EU and demonstrate that they have enough money to support themselves while there.
According to the visa-free agreement, Moldovan nationals are only allowed to spend 90 days in the EU during a 180-day term. Those intending to remain longer than this must apply for a long-term visa.
